Marx, As Usual
\n
\nAs usual this kid wanted to be a poet.
\nStarted off with the usual fairy stuff:
\nelves, gnomes, sirens,
\npale maiden meets robust knight<\/p>\n

who shoots through for the wars
\n(Jenny dear, is that a summary?)
\nStuff like: worlds howling death songs
\nto us helpless apes of a cold God. <\/em><\/p>\n

Thankfully my lawyer father disapproves.
\nThen the usual student duels, locked up
\nfor noise, drunkenness, banned weapons,
\nheaps of debts, get engaged to gentry Jenny.<\/p>\n

The usual hassles with the Prussian cops
\nfor my radical journalism in Cologne,
\nthe usual collapse of a communal pad in Paris,
\nthe usual deportations from France, Germany,<\/p>\n

finally the usual squalid bed-sit in London.
\nIn penury and sickness most of our kids die
\nbefore three, the usual affair with the faithful maid,
\nJenny often close to despair, I escape<\/p>\n

to the pleasant wars of political intrigue
\nand the British Museum Reading Room.
\nSpend haemorrhoidal years writing Kapital
\nthat I proudly submit isn\u2019t all that usual at all.<\/p>\n

Kept in pocket money and cigars
\nby comrade Fritz re-directing capital
\nfrom his well exploited workers to me, and
\nbastard Bakunin calls me democratic dictator.<\/p>\n

Ha, the great putschist oxymoron of anarchism!
\nActivist envy because he didn\u2019t have my brains
\nto put philosophy back on its feet.
\nNow that the other-worldliness of truth<\/p>\n

has disappeared, the truth of this world
\nwill be established by revolutionary action.
\nThe root of man is man not God,
\ninternal man a society now alienated<\/p>\n

from itself, society a slave market
\nof commodities filled with the theology
\nof money, that universal whore,
\nthrough which all men must now pass<\/p>\n

to survive and lose themselves completely
\nbefore they tip into consciousness of their own
\ntranspersonal misery, in radical action shaking
\nthe thrones of all circumstance that keep man<\/p>\n

bent, bereft, unfree, to finally found
\nsweet freedom\u2019s reign, nature reconciled\u2026
\n(Footnote: Kapital volume one went
\ncompletely unremarked, so wrote my own<\/p>\n

critiques positive and negative,
\nthen died
\nbefore volumes two and three,
\nas usual.)<\/p>\n
